Southern Comfort Biscuits & Gravy (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Proteins

01 - 1 lb breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)

→ Dairy and Eggs

02 - 2 cups milk
03 - 4 large eggs
04 - 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

→ Baking and Dry Goods

05 - 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuits, cut into quarters
06 - 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

→ Seasonings

07 - 1 tsp garlic powder
08 - 1 tsp onion powder
09 - Salt and pepper to taste
10 - Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

# Instructions:

01 - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
02 - In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Drain excess grease if necessary.
03 - Gradually stir the flour into the cooked sausage, cooking for about 1-2 minutes until the flour is well incorporated. Slowly whisk in the milk and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook until thickened (about 5-7 minutes). Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.
04 - In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spread the quartered biscuits evenly across the bottom.
05 - In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and the remaining milk. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the biscuit pieces.
06 - Pour the sausage gravy over the biscuits and eggs, making sure it's evenly distributed. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
07 - Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the top is golden and the casserole is set.
08 - Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired before serving.

# Notes:

01 - This casserole combines two Southern classics - biscuits and gravy - into one hearty dish perfect for breakfast or brunch.
02 - For a spicier version, use hot breakfast sausage and add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the gravy.
