Homemade Pizza Sauce Tips (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

01 - 1 tablespoon olive oil
02 - 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
03 - 1 teaspoon oregano
04 - 1 teaspoon sugar
05 - 1 teaspoon dried basil or 1 large twig fresh basil
06 - Pinch of red pepper flakes
07 - 1/2 teaspoon onion powder or 1 medium onion, halved
08 - 1 bottle tomato passata (24 oz or 680ml) or 1 (24 oz or 800g) can whole San Marzano tomatoes

# Instructions:

01 - Finely chop the garlic.
02 - Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds.
03 - Add the tomato passata and cook until combined.
04 - Add oregano, sugar, dried basil or a whole twig of fresh basil, red pepper flakes, and onion powder. Bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat for 15–20 minutes until the sauce is thickened.
05 - Remove and discard the basil twig.
06 - Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste. Chill well before putting it on pizza.

# Notes:

01 - Canned San Marzano tomatoes are more watery than tomato passata, requiring a longer cooking time, around 30–45 minutes.
02 - If using whole tomatoes, add a halved onion to the sauce and simmer for a longer period. Avoid adding onion if cooking for just 15 minutes.
03 - This sauce recipe yields 2 1/4 cups, enough for 3 medium pizzas.
